BOMB_073110_3_web

This weekend will host our second monthly party, titled BOMB. This time we are excited to have DJ Nater as our guest for the night. Nater has dj’ed as a part of the legendary GOO dance parties, djs from time to time for Hip Hop extraordinaire Conchance, and countless Hotel Frank basement parties. The guy knows what he’s doing in front of a turntable.

In addition, Remedy (Chicago) and George Quest (NYC) will be spinning on the 2nd floor all night.

Saturday, July 31st

3rd floor is free before 11 PM

Packed Friday!

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

This friday we’re double booked; some would think this is a bad thing, but we are pretty much just ecstatic to spread the love. Up first is our very own Derrick Calloway spinning along side our good friend Le Cube at Bar 415. It’s a sure way to start the night off in a good way. However, the event consisting of Terrence Pree and CP is the one I’m most excited about: we’re happy to announce that we’re playing the Donut Hill Project’s event consisting of Conchance, Noah’s Ark Was A Spaceship, and a DJ set from 1/Fourth.

The Donut Hill Project, under their website, summarizes what they are about in two concise sentences:”The Omaha skateboarding community has come together to be part of the future of skateboarding. We are building ourselves a home.” The event is a fundraiser, and all proceeds will go towards building materials for a new skatepark in Omaha and will even feature a silent art auction with local and national artists. It’s taking place at the old faint studio on 24th and Leavenworth and is being organized by Joel Petersen of Broken Spindles and The Faint. The purpose of this write up is to discuss the quality of the first two acts in order to instill in you a need to see these guys live.

I’ve been infatuated with Noah’s Ark Was A Spaceship for three years. Through a series of extenuating circumstances that stopped me from seeing them live for the first year of my infatuation, one of the times that I did in fact get to experience them comes to mind. One of the members, Andrew Gustafson, walked on stage with a Voltron/Megatron helmet. He didn’t speak to the crowd, but positioned his head right into the microphone and pressed a button on the helmet allowing some kind of Robot call to spring forth to which the entire crowd heard; this call signaled the beginning of their set. Needless to say, it was an impressive one, and they put on a hell of a show. I’ll let the music speak for itself. Attached is my favorite track that I got after purchasing their EP on Slumber Party Records,”My Name Is What Is Your Name.”

Next up is Conchance, a local Omaha rapper and skater, hot off the heels of winning the Omaha Entertainment Awards Best Hip Hop Artist. For anyone that has seen him live, they understand this award is well deserved. The passion and composition infused in his lyrics and live show is second to none, and I know of no one locally that is even attempting to do what he’s doing, let alone at his level. According to Slumber Party Records, he’s been in and out of the studio recording his first full length which should drop in the summer/fall. Below is one of his tracks. If you get a chance, check out his myspace and listen to my personal favorite entitled, “Olivia of Omaha.” I await his album with bated breath.

And finally us, putting on a dance party for an all ages event (a rare occurence for us) that will wreck everyone on the dance floor. So if you are not interested in the first two acts (which would make you crazy but I’ll try not to judge), come dance with us; donate your money for a good cause and shake your ass till the wee hours of 3 a.m. I’ll leave you with a track that Terrance has been playing lately and is a favorite of mine; expect to hear it on friday.

Omaha/Lincoln Track Meet Review

Sunday, April 4th, 2010

Wow. That’s all I could say about the Omaha/Lincoln Track Meet on Friday at the Bourbon Theatre, but it wouldn’t do the quality of the event justice. With a packed lineup featuring Brent Crampton, Nater, 1/Fourth, and Masaris representing the Omaha side and Bentone, Blac, $pencelove, and the Four5 crew showing love for the lincoln base, it was just nonstop quality from all sides.

Up first was Brent Crampton, doing a special set outside of Loom. I must say I was thoroughly impressed with the diversity of songs; going from Biggie, to a drum an’ bass track, and smashing pumpkins, he was working the hell out of those CDJ’s. Brent, you need to do more dance parties outside of Loom, I’m hooked.

Next were the scratch extraordinaires Four5 crew. Started off by James Erhman, it was heavy on the breaks and I was loving every minute of it. I was a little disappointed not to hear any Stanton Warriors, but I soon forgot that when I heard “Hands up thumbs down, represent that B-town” and proceeded to dance my heart out. They finished me off with a great remix of Rave is King. Great job guys, looking forward to hearing more of your stuff.

Fast forward to 1/Fourth’s second set featuring Masaris because this was one of my favorite parts of the night. Masaris transitioned beautifully into his set with a track that started off with the words,”This is called Sex education,” a hardass track by Light Year. Later on Serka dropped Diplo’s remix “Work is never Over” and I about passed out from dancing, even unintentionally ignoring some people that were trying to say hi to me. However, my favorite track easily from their set would of course have to be one dropped by Terrance Pree. It was a remix of Vandalism’s Throw Your Hands Up and I was in awe. I have never heard Terrance drop a track that I didn’t absolutely love.

The final set, by $pencelove, Bentone, and Blac was heavy on the dubstep and disco house. I’m not that big of a fan of dubstep, but there were some pretty choice tracks dropped by these guys; because of them, I might have to cross over into the dark side and start listening to some dubstep because I was thoroughly impressed at how they closed off the night and brought the house down. Every time I hear Spence I’m wowed and it was great to finally hear Bentone and Blac.

You might have noticed that Nater hasn’t been mentioned yet; that’s because I saved the best for last. Doing an electro set outside of Goo, house parties, or spinning for Conchance, I was excited at this rare occurence. Nater’s set was easily my favorite of the night, and although he says he had some troubles with Jame’s Ehrman’s rotary mixer, I still thought it was a beautiful collection of tracks. I about exploded towards the end of his set when he dropped an unreleased Pon De Street/Funk with Me edit that blew me out of the water and he closed it off with an older remix by Myles Dyson called frequency. Nater Smith: the most underrated DJ in Omaha.

All in all, the night was a success. Much love to Spence for setting it up and inviting us out to play, and big thanks to all the great DJ’s that made the night special. Also, props to VJ Dinan for sweet visuals; if there’s one thing lincoln can’t touch us on, it’s Dinan. This time I’ll have my sweat band and track shorts ready;I can’t wait for the next Track Meet.

Below are just a few of the choice tracks that I loved from the night:

Vandalism – Throw Your Hands Up (Angger Dimas Remix)

Slyde – Frequency (Miles Dyson Remix)

Daft Punk – Work Is Never Over (Diplo Remix)

Light Year – Sex Education

Omaha vs. Lincoln Track Meet Video

Saturday, April 3rd, 2010

Bourbon Theatre was legit. With a packed lineup of many great dj’s from Lincoln and Omaha going at it, it’s no surprise it got sweaty real fast. Thanks to $pencelove for setting up this impressive friendly battle.

Also, thanks to DJ Blac for doing a live broadcast of the entire night on www.thedjlink.com. Below are the videos. I’ll just say I (serka) was anxious to redeem my first set. But nonetheless, it was an incredible night with almost too much talent on the stage. We were pumped to have Masaris spinning with us, and he definitely brought the confetti poppers and hip thrusts.
